What are the new immigration rules for international students wanting to study in the UK?
Effective January 2024, the UK
government has implemented new regulations for international students residing
in the country. These students will no longer be permitted to sponsor
dependents' visas, such as spouses or children, based on their student status.
International students will no longer be allowed to switch to a Graduate visa without finishing their original study program, effective July 17th. The government has also announced that the Graduate visa will be reviewed by the Migration Advisory Committee in early 2024, and changes may occur as a result.
Student visa requirements :
The student visa has replaced the Tier 4 (General) student visa. Requirements for the student visa include:
- · Be at least 16 years old (or have parental consent if you're 16-17).
- · Have an offer to study at an approved educational institution.
- · Have sufficient financial means to cover your expenses during your studies.
- · Have proven English language proficiency (Secure English Language Test certification).
HOW TO APPLY FOR A UK STUDENT VISA.
Can I bring my partner and children to the UK as an international student?
When applying for a UK study
visa, your spouse and children are considered "dependents." They may
be eligible to accompany you during your studies, but only for specific visa
types and course levels. Additionally, your dependents must meet specific
requirements to legally be present in the UK with you.
To establish your relationship with your dependents, submit documents such as marriage or civil partnership certificates for spouses and birth certificates for children. Additionally, your dependents must demonstrate financial independence by providing evidence of sufficient funds to sustain themselves during your studies. The required amount varies based on your study location. This amount is in addition to the financial resources you must have for your own support.
What happens to my visa after I graduate?
The duration of your student
visa in the UK aligns with the length of your study program. Once your visa
expires, you must depart the country. Unlike other visas, there is no extension
period after the expiration date; you must renew or apply for a new visa to
continue your education legally.
Under the
revised UK regulations, international students completing their studies can
apply for a Graduate visa, which extends their stay for two years
post-completion. To be eligible, students must be present in the UK and submit
their application before their student visa expires. However, those with a PhD
or doctorate qualification will receive a Graduate visa valid for three years.
While recent changes apply to international students in the UK, it remains an exceptional destination for studying, living, and refining your English skills.
